As a teenager growing up in Brantford, Ida Adamowicz hated the city.
“I didn’t think it was beautiful,” the 26-year-old photographer said.
When she had the chance, Adamowicz packed up and left. She spent two years living in Vancouver and another year living in Europe before finally returning home this past September.
“I hated Brantford, but then I got out and saw the beauty you can find,” she said. “I realized that there is beauty (in Brantford). You just have to look for it.”
Adamowicz grabbed her camera and over the past few months has made a point of finding that beauty. Read More

The selection of paintings here explore the ideas and imagery relating to the human figure. This represents a return to my roots in terms of subject matter. As a sculpture student a Central School of Art and Design in London, England, I was preoccupied with the figure.
Moving in 1993, to the village of Oakland, I became more interested in the Canadian landscape, living for the first time in a rural setting. I subsequently went on to expand the range of influences, imagery and subject matter, exploring the potential of paint and evolving stylistically. I fee I have now come full circle with a rekindling of my passion for the figure as the dominant motif, with a more overtly narrative approach.
My influences are many and varied, but come mostly from expressionistic sources, where feeling overcomes an intellectual approach to making art. I do not think consciously about my work at various stages of the making of it; ultimately spontaneity and emotion drive the work, and when I do consider design theory it happens mostly on an unconscious level or reflectively.
The title of this show relates to how a variety of influences can affect my work and whether I live in London or Oakland a sense of village or community will provide support in so many ways.
I hope you enjoy my work.
